A lombardiai együttes a selejtezőben indult az idei kiírásban, és ez szintén egyedülállóvá teszi az idei sikerét. Az olasz együttes mindkét gólja a korábban mellőzött Filippo Inzaghi nevéhez kötődik, aki az első félidőben Andrea Pirlo szabadrúgásába ért bele, a hajrában viszont klasszikus csatárgólt szerzett. Dirk Kuyt a végén még szépített, de az egyenlítés már nem sikerült. A Milan visszavágott a 2005-ös fináléért, amikor 3-0-s előnyről veszített a „vörösökkel” szemben. Carlo Ancelotti, a Milan edzője nem okozott meglepetést, mikor kihirdette kezdőcsapatát. Az olasz szakember Inzaghit részesítette előnyben Gilardinóval szemben, és a nyolcadik BEK, illetve BL-döntőjét vívó Maldini is bekerült a csapatba. Rafael Benitez ellenben meglepett mindenkit, ugyanis kihagyta Peter Crouchot, és helyette egy védekező középpályást, Javier Mascheranót nevezett. A sérüléséből felépült Zenden pedig kiszorította Harry Kewellt. Nem lehet állítani, hogy egymásnak estek a csapatok a mérkőzés elején, komoly helyzetek nem alakultak ki. A kapusoknak egy-egy védenivalójuk volt, Didának egy Pennant-lövést, Reinának pedig egy Kaká-próbálkozást kellett hatástalanítania. Xabi Alonsónak volt még egy veszélyes lövése, de az a kaput nem találta el. Már majdnem vége volt a félidőnek, amikor egy Xabi Alonso-Kaká összecsapás után szabadrúgást ítélt Fandel játékvezető. Pirlo lőtte el a labdát, amely megpattant Filippo Inzaghi leszorított kezén, és – Reina kapust becsapva – a háló közepébe vágódott. Ez volt a rutinos olasz csatár 37. gólja a BL-ben. Benitez nem hozta be a szünetben Crouchot, változatlan összeállításban kezdték a második játékrészt a csapatok. Negyedóra elteltével már cserélt a spanyol szakember, de a Zenden-Kewell váltás nem hozott változást a csapat szerkezetében. Steven Gerrard viszont az eredményt megváltoztathatta volna, de a csapatkapitány nem tudott élni Gattuso hibájából: hiába állt már csak Didával szemben, lapos gurítása a brazil kapus zsákmánya lett. A 73. percben újra az angolok sztárja került lövőhelyzetbe, de ez a próbálkozás a jobb sarok mellett zúgott el. Rafael Benitez végül csak a 78. percben hozta be Peter Crouchot, ezzel együtt kivette védekező középpályását, Mascheranót a csapatból. A 82. percben Filippo Inzaghi végleg eldöntötte a találkozót, Kaká labdájával kiugrott a leshatárról, majd a vetődő Reina alatt a jobb sarokba gurított. A 89. percben Kuyt közeli fejesével ugyan még szépített a Liverpool, de az egyenlítésre már nem volt ereje.
