Beyond colourful touches like the affectionate nod to Arabic music's double harmonic scales on "Monsta", these tracks' grooves are spiked with emotional resonance that draws equally from Bennett's vulnerable singing and scathing lyrics. "I know I f**ked up/I'm just a loser," she breezily intones on "Supalonely" against a sticky beat, a couched disco vibe and a suave guest verse from New York singer Gus Dapperton. First came nine albums of the solo songs, with soprano Juliane Banse and baritone Andreas Schmidt, beautifully sung and well thought out. This was followed by the complete folksong arrangements, with Schmidt and mezzo Iris Vermillion. Last came the present album of the complete duets and quartets, featuring the three earlier singers along with mezzo Ingeborg Danz and tenors Christoph Prégardien and Marcus Ullmann. The best known and most recorded works are the two sets of Liebeslieder Waltzes; these performances are beautifully sung and feature an uncommon attention to dynamics, phrasing, and subtle tempo variations. The other works are similarly well done. But perhaps the real hero of these albums is pianist Helmut Deutsch, who has quietly become one of the finest song accompanists around. His technical facility, beautiful sound, and thorough sympathy with his singers are outstanding. My only slight quibble is in the solo songs. Banse takes on the songs on female texts and Schmidt those on male texts. But many of the male songs were written for high voice, i.e., tenor, and downward transposition is often problematic in terms of piano texture. Deutsch does his best to keep the piano parts transparent, but Brahms often doesn't make it easy. But I strongly recommend all of these recordings. Thanks to Brahms's well-known self criticism, he almost never published a weak song, and there are innumerable unknown gems to be found. Full texts and translations, and good notes. It's maybe a bit more pure pop now, but still very catchy and likable. More electronics are being used as well, which adds to an even more innovative music mix. Jocke Åhlund, also member of Teddybears Sthlm, has claimed that old krautrock and similar music always has meant a lot to him. César Vidal may not have the purest of voices, but it has a fair amount of personality and is just the type of vocals that fit this type of sound. Federico Aubele - Amatoria ALBUM DESCRIPTION Some listeners have a hard time comprehending or appreciating subtlety, which is why so many of the more myopic jazz critics had no kind words for jazz' Cool School back in the 1950s and '60s. But in fact, subtlety can be compelling; it has worked wonders for artists ranging from Joni Mitchell to João Gilberto to Sade to the late Chet Baker. And subtlety certainly works well for Federico Aubele on Amatoria. This December 2008 recording never shouts to get one's attention; Aubele is a master of restraint and understatement, but that doesn't mean that the Argentinean singer/songwriter isn't highly expressive on breezy, gently introspective offerings such as "Siempre Nuevo" ("Always New"), "Tan Cerca" ("So Near"), "Luna y Sol" ("Moon and Sun") and "Este Amor" ("This Love"). A wide variety of influences assert themselves on this 40-minute CD, ranging from downtempo and trip-hop to reggae, boleros, flamenco, tango, and salsa. Aubele has cited the Beatles as an influence, and to be sure, the influence of Fab Four's softer side (as in "My Michelle," "Across the Universe," and "A Day in the Life") does assert itself on parts of Amatoria (the fact that this album was recorded 38 years after the Beatles' breakup is one of the many examples of how long-lasting their influence has been). But whatever influences might assert themselves on a particular track, Aubele's songs always sound very personal. Amatoria doesn't beat listeners over the head with Aubele's emotions, but for those who can appreciate subtlety and understatement, this excellent album never fails to demonstrate that the Buenos Aires native is an artist of major depth and substance. ~ Alex Henderson Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]
