  1. Artist: Sarathy Korwar Title: Coolie Year Of Release: 2019 Label: The Leaf Label Genre: Jazz; dub; world and improvised music Quality: 16-bit/44.1kHz FLAC; 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC Total Time: 21:32 Total Size: 139; 248 MB Born in the US, Sarathy Korwar grew up in Ahmedabad and Chennai in India. He began playing tabla aged 10, but was also drawn to the American music that he heard on the radio and leaking through the doorway of his local jazz music shop (Ahmad Jamal and John Coltrane were early discoveries). At 17, Korwar moved to Pune to study Environmental Science, but instead dedicated his time to music, practising tabla under the tutelage of Rajeev Devasthali, translating his skills to the western drum kit and playing as a session musician. On completing these studies a decade ago, he moved to London where he trained as a classical tabla player under the guidance of Sanju Sahai at SOAS (The School of Oriental and African Studies), focusing on the adaptation of Indian classical rhythmic material to non-Indian percussion instruments. Korwar has since established himself as one of the most original and compelling voices in the UK jazz scene, leading the UPAJ Collective - a loose band of South Asian jazz and Indian classical musicians brought together through a love of collaboration and improvisation who set up a residency at the Jazz Café in London. Korwar has collaborated with the likes of Shabaka Hutchings (The Comet Is Coming), clarinettist Arun Ghosh and producer Hieroglyphic Being, as well as groups Penya and Ill Considered. He has toured with Kamasi Washington, Yussef Kamaal and Moses Boyd. Korwar's daring debut album, Day To Day, recorded with the support of the Steve Reid Foundation, was released by Ninja Tune in 2016. The album fused traditional folk music recorded with the Sidi community in India (combining East African, Sufi and Indian influences) with contemporary jazz and electronics. In November 2018, Gearbox Records released a triple vinyl live album by Sarathy Korwar and UPAJ Collective. My East Is Your West, performed and recorded at a sold out Church of Sound show, is a brilliant and unique blend of London's new jazz talent with Indian classical instrumentation. A critically-acclaimed take on the cultural appropriation of 'spiritual' Indo-jazz, the three hour show was recorded following a single 45-minute rehearsal. The resulting album was awarded The Guardian's Contemporary Album of the Month. Korwar releasee his second studio album, More Arriving, through The Leaf Label in July 2019. With this latest release, Korwar blasts out his own vibrant, pluralistic narrative for the world to hear. This is not necessarily a record of unity; it is an honest reflection of Korwar's experience of being an Indian in Britain, and as such is a leap forward from his previous releases, incorporating rappers from Mumbai and New Delhi, spoken word and his own Indian classical and jazz performances. More Arriving is a record born of confrontation; one for our confrontational times. 01. Sarathy Korwar - Coolie (5:25) 02. Sarathy Korwar - Coolie (Dennis Bovell Dub) (5:30) 03. Autechre - Drane2 AllMusic Review by Greg Prato Autechre create a fascinating sonic world on their fifth album release, where electronic pulses and blips are used to create fantastic textural waves. Members Sean Booth and Rob Brown prove they've become masters of programming throughout, issuing a more than suitable follow-up to their critically praised 1995 release, Tri Repetae++ (1997's Chiastic Slide wasn't considered a true follow-up by the band). Although it may be hard to take for those uninitiated into Autechre's unique style (it's hard to detect melodies initially), you'll discover something new with each repeated listen. Since all the songs are cut from the same sonic cloth, the album is best when listened to in its entirety, but the tracks "Acroyear2," "Rae," and "Fold4, Wrap5" are definite highlights. Although not for everyone, LP5 should be admired, since it's not comparable to anything past or present. Uncompromisingly cutting-edge. 3. Artist: Seefeel Title: Succour Year Of Release: 1995/2019 Label: Warp Records Genre: Techno, IDM, Experimental, Ambient Quality: 320 kbps / FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 01:01:54 Total Size: 142.5 MB / 275,71 MB Tracklist: [5:52] 01. Seefeel - Rupt [4:26] 08. Seefeel - Vex [5:40] 09. Seefeel - Cut [7:52] 10. Seefeel - Utreat AllMusic Review by Glenn Swan There are those typically Seefeel-ish moments in Succour -- the looping of heavily treated sounds, vocals, keyboards, and guitar feedback that either transcend the clichés of electronica or wish it had a little more of it. Admittedly, Mark Clifford, Darren Seymour, Sarah Peacock, and Justin Fletcher do not want to be Moby or Underworld or anyone like that -- their guitar roots pointed them toward moody ambience and experimentation rather than the dance clubs. To this end they have become a respectable oddity -- prog-rock disguised as ambient psuedo-trance. By the time we reach them at this album, there are a couple rough spots, as they were supposedly having band problems at the time. Tracks like "Extract" repeat its key phrase tiredly for up to seven minutes, and frequently Clifford and Fletcher run to their signature tin-can drum samples and ambient clang of pipes in an attempt to keep other tracks afloat (like the somewhat unsurprising "Rupt" and "Cut"). Even more percussively obnoxious is "Vex" (a perfect title, under the circumstances), but it's the first time that listeners might recognize Seymour's bass amongst all the heavy treatments (and that's near the end of the album). What redeems Succour is a half-dozen other tracks, like the edgy polyrhythms and watery ambience of "When Face Was Face," replete with steady clangs and layered vocal lilts, making the whole production like a Javanese gamelan in space. "Fracture" follows next, a stark anthem with almost atypical and crunchy drums like a duet of rusted gasoline barrels, surrounded by guitar feedback and echoing vocals. "Ruby-Ha," though about as repetitive as "Extract," manages a little variation with the tattered ribbons of Peacock's voice (without whom neither the track nor the album would fare as well), sort of like a nursery-school lullaby long forgotten, played back on a pocket TV. "Gatha" comes off like a track from MAIN, with its needling guitar ripples, industrial static, and cavernous growls, though a bit heavy-handed on the bass drum (Indian tribes come to mind). Without the drum, perhaps there would be a taste of something rather refreshing in its minimalism. "Cut" has all the trappings of the weaker songs, but fares better because of the "dubby" bassline and somewhat more soulful rhythm track. "Utreat" closes out the disc beautifully, with a minimal call-and-response loop between electric piano and bass, peppered with next-door vocals and keyboard vapors. This track alone makes up for a third of the albums shortcomings. Overall, this is perhaps the bleakest album from Seefeel (their final for Warp records), but few do it as well. The twelve-track 'Ultimate Yokota 1991-2019' collection traverses through Yokota's emotive and playful house sounds, employing infectious synth hooks, analogue drums, soulful vocals and an underlying positive energy throughout. Here we take the initiative to shine a light on one of Japan's unsung heroes of House for those who may be unfamiliar with his impressive back catalogue, the compilation will be hitting shelves from the 21st October 2019. Shinichiro Yokota: "In the late 80s my obsession towards House music began and the biggest influence I had was through Soichi Terada. I went to his house almost every week, and watched him perform his magic with synthesizers, samplers, and sequencers. I soon learned how to use them as well and started producing a variety of tracks. Many of the tracks produced during this time were released on CD or vinyl through 'Far East Recording'. This project 'Ultimate Yokota' is a careful selection of tracks from the early 90's which haven't been released on vinyl ever. It is my 30 years chronicle. 'TOKYO 018' is a track Soichi and myself collaborated on for the first time in 15 years. Not all the tracks on this record is produced with Soichi but it's safe to say that all my tracks have been influenced by and 'created' together with him. Soichi Terada: ''Amongst the 90's Japanese house music that's been re-evaluated in recent years, many people are highly recognizing "Do It Again". One thing that comes to my mind which I contribute to this song's producer, Shinichiro Yokota, is the excitement and cheers of the audience when I perform it in my live show. With just 7 notes of refrain making the dance floor really pop up. Thanks to that I had the opportunity to do over 120 live shows in various European cities. Many people mistakenly think "Do It Again" is Soichi Terada's work because of the wrong credits on YouTube, but at least those of you who love this record will be reaffirming the beautiful sound that Shinichiro Yokota is creating. And Shinichiro Yokota, you "Did It Again"! That's what you are feeling.'' Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Autechre - Rsdio AllMusic Review by Ned Raggett Starting with the snarling, slow machine-funk of "Dael," Tri Repetae fully confirms Autechre's evolution into electronic noise kings. If not as immediately experimental as the fractured work by the likes of Merzbow, Tri Repetae expertly harnesses the need for a beat to perfectly balance out the resolutely fierce, crunching samples and busy arrangements, turning from being inspired by Aphex Twin to being equally inspiring in itself. "Rotar" does a particularly fine job on this front, with high-pitched sounds against low, distorted bass blasts -- and this only forms part of the percussion arrangement. The basic combination of soft melody and harsh beats are here as well, coming fully to the fore and resulting in such fine songs as the synth-string/organ wheeze laden "Leterel" and the quirky, sweet "Gnit." Nearly every track has a particular edge or element to it, making it eminently listenable and distinct. "Stud," for all of its macho connotations, actually takes a gentler path than most of the album's tunes, with a flowing synth wash at the center of a stripped-down but sharp digital-drum punch; by the end of the song, the synth loops float freely in an uneasy, ambient wave. With the drowsy pulse of "Overand" and the echoing beats of "Radio" (perhaps not so ironically, the most straightforward of the album's songs) to close things out, Tri Repetae stands as a varied, accomplished album, clear evidence of Autechre's unique genius around sound. American releases included a bonus disc compiling the Anvil Vapre and Garbage EPs. Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Squarepusher - Gong Acid AllMusic Review by John Bush Though listeners may have expected an EP of B-sides hot on the heels of the last Squarepusher full-length, Tom Jenkinson appeared to have already moved on with this "mini-album." It has a similar feel (read: tin-can production) to Music Is Rotted One Note, but few of these tracks have the short-shrift sound of your average outtakes. The opener, "Iambic 5 Poetry," is much more inclined to melody and atmosphere, with cascading dub effects hitting off the beat and echoing low into the mix. The EP is definitely less obsessed with '70s fusion and more squarely experimental, akin to the quasi-single "My Sound" from Music Is Rotted One Note. Overall, Budakhan Mindphone breaks the bounds of fan-only singles and earns respect on its own worth. Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Squarepusher - Last Ap Roach AllMusic Review by Greg Prato The one-man drum'n'bass outfit Squarepusher (aka Tom Jenkinson) treads upon more unpredictable terrain on Music Is Rotted One Note. Although the album still contains elements of his usual drum'n'bass sound, this is by and large a jazz/fusion affair. Jenkinson does a masterful job playing all the instruments live and by himself, and perfectly re-creates the funky atmosphere of such early-'70s Miles Davis classics as Get Up With It and On the Corner. Jenkinson's performances throughout the disc are both flawless and inspired -- he obviously realized that if he were to pay tribute to Miles, nothing but the best would do. Davis' spirit lives on in such tracks as "Don't Go Plastic," "Dust Switch," "137 (Rinse)," and "Theme From Vertical Hold," while "My Sound" perfectly captures the essence of Miles' calming and reflective compositions. But don't be misled; this is not a by-the-numbers rip-off of Miles Davis. Jenkinson updates these familiar sounds with '90s recording techniques and injects enough of his own style into the mix to keep it recognizable. Miles would be proud. "Alexis" (a track originally recorded with the James Gang) opens and closes the album and shows the evolution of a song. First a rough guitar-only demo, last a more developed piece with Bolin on all instruments (drums, acoustic, and electric guitars). One thing that's evident on many of the Archives releases is how many excellent songs were written by Bolin but never made it past demo form. "Celebration" and the Latin-flavored "Gypsy Moon" are examples. The exotic sounding "Destiny," featuring flutist Jeremy Steig plus Jan Hammer, Billy Cobham, and Gene Perla, shows Bolin working in the service of the song and not as the focus, as he often was. Because many of the songs are not fully realized and sound quality varies, this release is geared more toward the serious fan. Tracklist: 1. Tommy Bolin - Alexis (Jeff Cook, Tommy Bolin) - 4:24 2. Dream Police (Live at the Forum, Los Angeles, CA - December 1979) Combining a love for British guitar pop songcraft with crunching power chords and a flair for the absurd, Cheap Trick provided the necessary links between '60s pop, heavy metal, and punk. Led by guitarist Rick Nielsen, the band's early albums were filled with highly melodic, well-written songs that drew equally from the crafted pop of the Beatles, the sonic assault of the Who, and the tongue-in-cheek musical eclecticism and humor of the Move. A canny student of '60s rock, Nielsen first worked with bassist Tom Petersson in the band Fuse, who released one album in 1969 before dissolving. Nielsen and Petersson continued working together in several formats until they teamed with drummer Bun E. Carlos and vocalist Robin Zander to form the definitive lineup of Cheap Trick in 1975. After developing a cult following after three outstanding albums -- 1977's Cheap Trick and In Color and 1978's Heaven Tonight -- and relentless touring, Cheap Trick scored an unexpected hit with 1978's At Budokan, a live album originally issued only in Japan that became their international breakthrough. Glossier production and fuzzy creative direction sapped the band's spirit on most of their work of the '80s, despite the commercial success of 1988's Lap of Luxury and its Number One single "The Flame." However, after leaving the major labels behind with 1997's Cheap Trick, the band enjoyed a creative second wind, reaffirming the strength of their formula on-stage and in the studio, and 2006's Rockford demonstrated they were far from a spent force. They later signed with the successful country label Big Machine and released 2016's Bang, Zoom, Crazy . Hello within months of being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, kicking off a productive streak that saw them release three albums within 18 months. Their sound provided a blueprint for both power pop and arena rock; it also had a surprisingly long-lived effect on both alternative and heavy metal bands of the '80s and '90s, who often relied on the same combination of loud riffs and catchy melodies. 25. Artist: Johnny Guitar Watson Title: Hot Just Like TNT Year Of Release: 2009 Label: Ace Records Genre: Soul, R&B Quality: flac lossless Total Time: 00:47:18 Total Size: 147 mb Tracklist --------- 01. Hot Little Mama 02. I Love To Love You 03. Hot Little Mama 04. Don't Touch Me 05. Too Tired 06. Lonely Girl 07. Ain't Gonna Hush 08. Those Lonely, Lonely Nights 09. Oh Baby 10. Someone Cares For Me 11. Ruben 12. Give A Little 13. Love Me Baby 14. She Moves Me 15. Ruben 16. Three Hours Past Midnight 17. Love Bandit (Gangster Of Love) This generous serving of 28 tracks focuses on Watson's mid-1950s recordings (both released and unissued) for RPM, throwing in some songs by singers Devonia Williams, Jeannie Barnes, and Crodella de Milo (on whose songs he was accompanist); a couple of 1957-58 singles for Keen; and some previously unavailable tracks he recorded for Johnny Otis, probably dating from the late 1950s and early 1960s. This is worthwhile for fans of Watson in particular as well as fans of the R&B-blues crossover sound of the '50s in general. It's a patchy set, however, in which Watson and his associates try on several different styles for size, but not always with memorable success. Watson's stinging guitar is satisfying on cuts like "Hot Little Mama," and one can tell that it was probably played at a volume that challenged the limitations of 1950s engineering technology; but his playing is sometimes less to the fore in the arrangement than is desirable. For the most part, the material is adequate but not exciting. Sometimes it follows the lead of Watson's avowed hero Ray Charles, while other times it is shaded with doo wop and New Orleans R&B. On the Keen tracks he ventures into Larry Willliams-styled rock; on "Gangster of Love" (one of the standouts on the disc), he accomplishes swinging and boasting first-person-narrative blues. The tunes certainly aren't as impressive as the instrumental skills of Watson and the RPM/Modern house bands overseen by Maxwell Davis. Among the tracks, one will find the 1956 single "Three Hours Past Midnight" - a slow blues that, according to the liner notes, the teenaged Frank Zappa considered "his number one record which had a big influence on his own guitar playing."
