Some furious Googling reveals that whilst the HD 3xxx PCI-E have the onboard Realtek sound chip, the AGP versions do not. Something to do with not being able to do it on the PCI buss.
Looks like my ideal card (in fact so far it's the only 100% suitable one I've found) still remains the Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro HDMI, as that gets round the AGP issue by having SPDIF in so I can add sound from a separate card.
But they came out a while ago and nobody seems to be selling them. Rubbish!
