A művelt Benyovszky hamar kivívta a helyi kormányzó bizalmát. Közben elkészítette Kamcsatka első földrajzi, néprajzi és álattani leírását. 1771 tavaszán a fegyenctelepre száműzött cári tisztekkel felkelést szervezett, elfoglalt egy erődöt, a kikötőben horgonyzó hajókat, és kiáltványt szerkesztett. Ez az írásmű a későbbi oroszországi forradalmi mozgalmak manifesztumainak mintájául szolgált. Hajóval előbb a Bering-szigeteket érintette, majd a Mátyás-, Lőrinc-szigetek érintésével Amerika partjától délnek vette útját, eljut az Aleut-szigetekre, majd a Kurili-szigetek érintésével kikötött a japán szigeteken is. 1773-ban megtelepedett Madagaszkáron, ahol két erődöt is emelt támaszpontul, s 1774-ben megalapítja (a francia uralkodó tiszteletére) Louisbourg városát. Ebben az időben még az európaiak nem ismerték Madagaszkár belsejét. Három nagy expedíciót szervezett, a tapasztalatairól szóló beszámolók Madagaszkár megismerésének fontos részei.
